Myths About 12-Step Programs For Sex Addiction May Hold People Back
Taking that first step toward recovery from sexual addiction may literally involve taking that first step into a group meeting. While intimidating to many people living with sexual addiction, walking in to that first meeting can open the door to long-term recovery. However, that can be a very difficult step to make for many individuals.
Sexual addiction has been the focus of numerous research studies and new treatment initiatives, including many studies that show the similarities at the brain-level between sexual addiction and other addictions, such as drugs or alcohol. voluntary group participation in 12-step programs are available nationwide, such as Sex Addicts Anonymous.
Still, many people are hesitant to get involved in a 12-step program and this may be based on stereotyped or misinformation, as addressed in a recent Psych Central article by Robert Weiss, clinical psychotherapist, author, educator and the founder of the Los Angeles-based center The Sexual Recovery Institute:
Myth: Only people who are really ill go to 12-step meetings. Reality: People from all along the recovery spectrum, including those showing beginning symptoms associated with sexual addiction and those who have been working through recovery for years, attend 12-step meetings every day. The common factor is a desire to pursue recovery and freedom from the addiction.
Myth: It’s way too difficult to talk about this problem in front of people a person doesn’t know. Reality: Meetings for sexual addiction are a mix of people who share often and those who may glean strength and support from merely listening or using tools like writing their thoughts. No one is obligated to share.
Myth: The 12-step groups for sexual addiction are run by experts and not people who understand the incredible difficulty of the addiction.
Reality: Nearly all 12-step programs, including sexual addiction, are run by people who are (or have) experienced addiction and recovery themselves. They are individuals from all walks of life who are actively pursuing recovery.
Sexual addiction 12-step programs are a voluntary, open, and in many cases, an effective addition to traditional therapy or counseling for sexual addiction.
