Celebrating National Recovery Month: Top 7 Digital Tools for Recovery

Posted on September 14th, 2011

September is National Recovery Month. This government recognized initiative promotes the societal benefits of treatment for substance use and mental disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible.

In celebration of National Recovery Month, and as technology continues to be an important part of the expansion and growth of the behavioral health industry, we thought it would be fun to offer some digital tools for managing the recovery process – which can be useful both for professionals and those in recovery!

  1. iPromises Recovery Companion: iPromises is a free iPhone App with trigger alerts, a visual journal, and a directory of AA meeting contact numbers in the U.S., Canada, and some international offices. iPromises helps those in recovery from addiction track their progress, contact like-minded individuals, and build a strong virtual support community.
  2. RemoteWebGuard.com: RemoteWebGuard.com is a PC, Mac and mobile compatible Internet filtering system. RemoteWebGuard and SafeEyes by Internet Safety block out triggering content while allowing users to search and browse the web.
  3. Skype: Skype allows the therapist to meet with the recovering addict and the recovering addict’s spouse when an in-office session just isn’t feasible. Skype improves on phone sessions by allowing therapists to "see" clients and judge whether their affect and visual mood match their words.
  4. Dr. Drew Pinsky, M.D. on Twitter: Dr. Drew Pinsky, M.D. is a Board Certified physician and leader in the field of addiction therapy. Follow him on Twitter for updates about informational interviews, links to helpful resources and encouraging words.
  5. Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S on Twitter: Robert Weiss was trained under Dr. Patrick Carnes, Ph.D., is a UCLA MSW graduate and former Board member. As the founder of The Sexual Recovery Institute, Rob Weiss is a leading expert and trusted commentator in the field of sexual addiction therapy.
  6. OneRecovery: OneRecovery is a safe, healthy, online community of people supporting each other during recovery from addiction. OneRecovery connects recovering addicts to a strong support network, using tools like social networking, blogs, forums, and group chats, to strengthen them on the journey to recovery.
