Study Says Women Over 50 May Still Have Strong Interest in Sex
A study of nearly 28,000 women aged 50 and over reveals what may be a surprising conclusion: As women age, they may still have strong desires for sexual activity, even with the hormonal changes of menopause.
Study results collected from the Women’s Health Initiative highlight the responses of women in the 50-plus age demographic. More than 60 percent of the 50- to 59-year-olds were considered on the active spectrum of sexual activity, and almost half of the participants in the 60 to 69 age group were enjoying sex on a regular basis. More than 33 percent of women who were 70 or older were participating in sexual activity.
Aside from the numbers, nearly 66 percent of the participants said they were very satisfied with their sexual encounters. Even those who were not fully satisfied with their sexual activities still desired to increase the quantity, said an article on Top News.
The results are noteworthy as researchers explore the effects of menopause and the associated hormonal changes it brings for women. Many researchers have previously assumed the hormonal changes of menopause would negatively impact a woman’s desire and interest in sex as she ages, but the study results may contradict these ideas.
The connection between good health, age and sex is also an area of research, with some studies stating that people who maintain their health may be twice as likely to enjoy a satisfying sex life as they age.
