Historically speaking, women have always been overlooked or underrepresented in addiction studies, whether the compulsive behavior studied had to do with alcohol, drugs, gambling, or sexual acting out. It has been 70 years since the founding of AA, 60 years since the American Medical Association recognized alcoholism as a disease, and yet it was not until the late 1980s that significant findings regarding very powerful gender differences in the development of alcoholism surfaced in research studies for other diseases, such as heart disease or AIDS, where women have also been underrepresented as research subjects.

Sex Addiction Can Affect Just About Anyone

Posted on July 11th, 2010

The increased attention sex addiction has been getting in the media has a positive and negative affect on the field of sexual recovery. On the one hand, more and more people are seeking recovery but on the other hand, the media’s tendency to focus mainly on celebrities has made the general public question the validity of an addiction to sex. The truth is: it’s as serious as any other addiction. According to SASH, it is estimated that 3-5 percent of the American population can be labeled as sex addicts. This is likely a conservative estimate since it is based on the number of people who actually check themselves in for treatment.

Kids Know Pornography When They See It

“This stuff comes barreling down the generations like a locomotive.” So said a man I’ll call Ted. Because so many sex addicts lead a double life, a “secret” life, they may believe (and their partners may believe) that their younger school-age children are not directly affected. Ted knows better. He’s a tall, good looking, successful 45 year old recovering sex addict. He remembers that when he was a kid growing up his father had a second home down the street from where the family lived which the father used to house his “girlfriends”. Kids know what’s going on, even young kids, and they know when something isn’t right. It affects them and skews their sense of what constitutes normal relating in ways they can’t understand or verbalize at the time.

The Addict’s Bumpy Road to Healing

Most sexually addicted clients enter treatment, whether outpatient, intensive program or residential care, not out of any great desire to be better people, but when facing major life consequences and losses related to their problem sexual behavior. Issues like “my wife found out about my going to sensual massages and made me get help to save our marriage” or “my boss told me if I didn’t get treatment after I got caught viewing porn at work I would be fired” are common reasons that push sex addicts into attending treatment.
