Leading Intimacy and Addiction Expert Robert Weiss to Speak on Sexual Addiction in the Digital Age
On June 19, Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, a noted clinician and founder of the Sexual Recovery InstituteSM, will present “Assessing and Treating Sexual Addiction in the Digital Age” at the Holiday Inn San Francisco Civic Center.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 27, 2015 – Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, internationally renowned psychotherapist, author and clinical educator, will present “Assessing and Treating Sexual Addiction in the Digital Age” at the Holiday Inn San Francisco Civic Center, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event includes three CE credits. Weiss, founder of the Sexual Recovery InstituteSM in Los Angeles, is senior vice president of clinical development for Elements Behavioral Health.
Weiss, author of Always Turned On: Sex Addiction in the Digital Age; Cruise Control: Understanding Sexual Addiction in Gay Men; and Closer Together, Further Apart: The Effect of Technology and the Internet on Parenting, Work, and Relationships, will provide an in-depth look at diagnostic issues and treatment challenges presented by clients with intimacy disorders and sex and pornography addictions.
The goal of this event is to encourage clinical insight, empathy and direction toward helping clients work through complex issues surrounding emotional health, sex and intimacy. “This is a fascinating, challenging time to be a therapist,” says Weiss. “Digital technology is shifting the ground beneath our feet as we try to keep up with rapid changes in the way that individuals are using and abusing it for connection. Without question, today’s high-speed Internet and social media apps are fueling (in some) out-of-control sexual behavior and impacting relationships in profound ways not even envisioned just a few years ago.”
The presentation will provide clinical background as well as cognitive behavioral tools and best practices for treating hypersexual behavior. It will also include an overview of the diagnosis of sexual addiction, common behaviors and problems encountered by sex addicts, and myths about sex addiction. Gender differences will be discussed along with the influence of Internet-based porn and online sexual access on sexual addicts.
Rounding out the presentation, Weiss, who has more than three decades of experience treating sexual addiction, will cover the most effective models for sex addiction treatment and provide useful resources for client education and referral.
This is critical information for therapists, he says. “We’re seeing increasing numbers of people struggling with sexual addictions, especially Internet-related behaviors – compulsive porn use, cybersex, nonstop sexting and the like. As therapists, we need to be prepared.”
The cost is $30 and lunch will be provided. For more information and to register, visit the Elements Behavioral Health events page.
